HER Number:MDV10400
Name:Higher Mill or Town Mill, East Budleigh

Summary

Site of Higher or Town Mill. The earliest documentary reference is in 1781 but it is said to be the site of the medieval manorial mill. The fact that it is close to the church and in apparently the oldest part of the village supports this theory. The mill was still working in 1908.

Three water mills were mentioned at east budleigh in 1578. 'town mills' was mentioned in 1850 and 'polslo's mill' in 1983. The 1842 tithe map shows a pond. The mill was still working in 1904 but later the mill building had gone and the overshot waterwheel was in a bad condition.
'higher mill' at east budleigh was mentioned as 'town mills' in 1850 and this entry seems to refer to that mill
