Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Mine not depicted on this map, although an area of quarrying is shown, which presumably was associated with the mine.

Hamilton Jenkin, Dr. A. K., 2005, Mines of Devon, 130, 157 (Monograph). SDV282410.

Devon Wheal Frances (or Francis) assumed by Dines to be an alternative name for the Yarner Mine, was in fact a quite distinct sett although it closely adjoined the latter on the high ground to the west. Working began about 1859 and in 1866 it was decided to purchase the Yarner Mine (then recently abandoned) for the sum of £250. As a consequence of this it was claimed by extending the Yarner adit, Devon Wheal Frances would be able to develop its lodes to a depth of 90 fathoms without the aid of machinery.
About this time the property was inspected by two visiting captains who reported that the mine laqy near the summit of a high hill and contained eleven lodes, four of which where exposed at surface showed widths of 4 to 14ft. In the cross-cut adit the lodes were principally composed of gossan and mundic (iron pyrites), with spots and leaders of green silicate of copper (chrysocolla). The mine was still active in 1870 when it was 30 fathoms deep and employing 40 people. No record of production has been found nor is it known when working finally ceased.
