HER Number:MDV104150
Name:Possible Quarry South of Scobbiscombe Farm

Summary

A possible quarry pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1945 and on images derived from Lidar data flown between 2001 and 2010. Its use is likely to pre-date the mid nineteenth century, but a natural origin cannot be ruled out.

A roughly circular pit is visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2013-2014, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV351146.

A roughly circular pit, 28 metres in diameter, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1945 and on images derived from Lidar data flown between 2001 and 2010. It is close to a quarry depicted and annotated on historic mapping and may be another extraction pit. It is not depicted on the available historic mapping, but is likely to pre-date the mid nineteenth century tithe map, as the adjacent field boundary appears to respect the area of the pit. However the possibility that this is a natural feature cannot be ruled out.
