In Brook Street (one of the principal shopping streets) there is a mixture of 19th and 19th century buildings with well detailed, mainly late 19th century shopfronts. These historic shopfronts are usually constructed in timber and have fascias, often with a moulded cornice, pilasters and console brackets (which support the fascia), a stallriser and moulded mullions and, or, transoms. These traditional shopfronts add to the liveliness of the street frontages and make a major contribution to the special interest of the conservation area.
