Duke Street represents part of the 19th century remodelling of the town by the Bedford Estate, and retains a number of purpose built 19th century shops, banks and other commercial buildings. These buildings are more prestigious with well detailed frontages, designed to impress, and they make a positive contribution to the special interest of the conservation area. They mainly date to the period between 1850 and 1900.
