HER Number:MDV104219
Name:Trackways South of Flete

Summary

A curvilinear holloway is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946 and on images derived from Lidar data captured between 2001 and 2010. It may be associated with the designed parkland of Flete but could feasibly pre-date it. Earthworks are highly likely to survive.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2013-2014, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV351146.

A deep curvilinear holloway is visible as an earthwork on oblique aerial photographs from 1946 and on images derived from Lidar data captured between 2001 and 2010. Its alignment is contiguous with a field boundary to the south, depicted as a lane on the Tithe map, and it appears to divide into two forks, one leading to Park Cottage and the other leading down to water level due east of Flete House. The former is only visible on an aerial photograph of 1979. A possible third branch could have curved up to Flete from approximately SX6282451204, perhaps relating to an earlier house, but this is less distinct and has not been transcribed. It is unclear whether the trackways are directly associated with the designed parkland or if they are part of a medieval transport route that pre-dates it. Earthworks are highly likely to survive.
