Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • (Former Type) BUILDING (Built, XIX to Late 20th Century - 1801 AD to 2000 AD)

Full description

Passmore, A. J. + Jones, P., 05/2013, Former Newton Abbot Hospital, Devon, Results of Historic Building Recording (Report - Survey). SDV351393.

This two-storeyed building formed part of a rear range of the 1830s workhouse. It was described in the assessment report as accommodation, but was probably actually used as a work room. A detailed description of the exterior was presented in the assessment report and no new observations were
made.
Internally, the building has been thoroughly modernised, and the ground floor entirely reordered when a single storey addition was added to the east in the mid 20th century. The internal layout is modern and no original internal (or former external) walls remain. The only surviving historic fittings
are some of the skirting boards, and where visible (behind suspended ceilings) earlier flat ceilings incorporating iron ventilation grills.

Exeter Archaeology, 2006, Newton Abbot Hospital, Devon. Archaeological Assessment and Historic Buildings Appraisal, 9, 16 (Report - Assessment). SDV347328.

Building B. Gabled two-storey structure constructed of irregularly coursed snecked limestone rubble. Divorced from its original contect and plan, the building is considered to be of moderate significance. See report for further details.

Ordnance Survey, 2013, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV350786.
