HER Number:MDV104350
Name:Barbed Wire Enclosure on Cockleridge Ham

Summary

A probable barbed wire enclosure is visible as an ephemeral structure on aerial photographs taken in 1941-1945. Possibly associated with two probable pillboxes, it is likely to be part of wider Second World War defences guarding the mouth of the estuary, and to have been removed soon after the war.

An ephemeral structure is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1941, and as a dark mark, possibly a vegetation mark, on aerial photographs taken in 1945. It is located on the eastern, landward side of the ditch that terminates at the possible pillbox on the south-west point of Cockleridge Ham. It is interpreted as a probable barbed wire enclosure, associated with the other Second World War defences guarding the mouth of the estuary. It is not visible on later available aerial photographs and was probably removed soon after the war.
