HER Number:MDV104426
Name:Possible Military Structure and Platform on the Southern Part of Thurlestone Golf Course

Summary

A small square structure on an oval earthwork platform is visible on aerial photographs between 1941 and 1945 and is tentatively interpreted as a Second World War military lookout or defensive building, associated with other similar buildings along this stretch of coast. It was probably removed soon after the war ended, although the platform may survive as an earthwork.

A small structure with flat roof, approximately 3 metres square, is visible on aerial photographs between 1941 and 1945, on the northern part of a roughly circular earthwork platform circa 20 metres in diameter. At 40 metres from the cliff edge above Yarmouth Sand, its location is consistent with use as a defensive lookout protecting against invasion from this potential landing place, and is likely to be of Second World War date. It may be associated with several other small buildings sited along the coast within Thurlestone Golf Course (e.g. MDV104421, MDV104424). This building is not visible on later available aerial photographs, and it is likely to have been removed soon after the war ended, although it is possible that the earthwork survives.
