Narrow ridge and furrow earthworks are visible across Stowford Moor on aerial photographs taken between the 1940s and 2006-2007. They are likely to have resulted from deep ploughing of rough ground in the nineteenth century to assist in drainage and improve the land for agriculture.

Devon Wildlife Trust was given the information that these ridges were for World War Two arable (probably potatoes), initiated by the County Wartime Agriculture Committee and thought to have been laid out in 1940 and worked until the end of harvest in 1945.
