  • HORSE ENGINE HOUSE (Built, XIX - 1801 AD to 1900 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Horse engine house depicted on east side of barn.

Child, P., 2000, Countryside Stewardship. Litchadon Farm, South Molton (Correspondence). SDV351573.

Remains of a horse engine behind the threshing barn, in the centre of its east side (building E on plan). This has largely collapsed since the building was listed in the 1980s and the main beam from which the machinery was suspended appears to have been cut out. All that is left is the round rear wall and a small section of the roof where it abuts the barn. The collapse of this building is to be regretted but its restoration, given the amount of work required on other buildings at Litchaton, must be considered a low priority.

Ordnance Survey, 2013, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV350786.

English Heritage, 2013, National Heritage List for England (National Heritage List for England). SDV350785.

The horse engine house is included within the listing for 'Litchaton Farmhouse with shippon and barn adjoining to east and front garden walls adjoining to south'.
'Polygonal-ended horse engine house to right (east).' 'Horse-ening house to right-hand return front, supported on stone piers with huge beams and king-post truss inside.'
See listing description for full details of house, shippon, barn and garden walls.
