The two recesses exposed either side of the fireplace in the living room at Higher Berry farmhouse are typical examples of Devon cream ovens. These are designed specifically to make clotted cream, which is heated gently in a bowl which sits near the recess on top of a low charcoal fire. Probably 19th century. Recommendation to conserve as an interesting traditional feature. Sketch plans attached.
