'Pound' shown on 19th century map as a sub-square enclosure to the north of the castle.

The pound is within the Scheduled Monument area in Lydford on the north-east side of the castle.


Exeter Archaeology, 2008, Archaeological Assessment of Proposed Sewage Treatment Works at Lydford (Report - Assessment). SDV351460.

To the rear of Castle Inn the Tithe Map depicts two small adjoining enclosed plots recorded as 'Pound' in the Apportionment. A single plot is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1884 and is still shown on modern mapping. The site is represented on the ground by a rectangular raised platform within the ditch of the castle bailey. There is no enclosing fence. The area to the south is still detectable as a recess in the boundary containing dumped rubbish and recycling banks in 2008.
