To the south of the Coastguard Station the Ordnance Survey 1890 map (Fig. 6.6) depicts a building within an enclosure containing a flagstaff (F.S). It is not shown on the Tithe Map. It is depicted in a painting of 1881 as a red (?brick) single storey building, with a chimney, and possibly a large door in the gable end facing the beach, and shown as two adjoining buildings on a photograph of circa 1900. It seems possible that it was a boat house associated with the coastguard station. The building was still present in 1905, but not in 1933, by which time Marine Drive had been constructed, possibly encroaching on the site (Fig. 6.8). Brickwork visible to the south of the present St John's Ambulance hut could be related to the building.
