At the Donkey Sanctury a plaque was created in 2003 to remember the donkeys and mules used during the wars to carry supplies. The memorial is in the "Russell" Memorial Garden.
The plaque reads:
'Dedicated to all those donkeys and mules
who have lost their lives in war'
Until World War I armies depended almost entirely on animals for transport. The last troop of mules in the British Army was disbanded in Hong Kong in 1976.
