A memorial clock situated in the tower of St Mary the Virgin. The clock was made by Smith of Derby in 1923 and the company has regularly maintained it ever since. It had always been wound by hand by lifting very heavy weights once a week. However, one week, the weights broke through the base of their wooden enclosure into the bell ringers’ chamber. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £2,445 to install an autowinding mechanism which would be safer to operate.
The clock is in memory of those who died in World War 1 and was paid for by public subscription.
Inside the tower is a brass plaque with the inscription:

'The clock in this tower
and the cross were erected in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918'

Imperial War Museum, 2014, War Memorials Archive, 26017 (Website). SDV356253.

Clock and bells with dedicatory brass plaque. Incised inscription in black lettering.
