Full description

Cotswold Archaeology, 2013, Land at Capelands Farm, North Devon (Correspondence). SDV352292.

Letter regarding the proposal for a solar park on land on Capelands Farm. A desk-based assessment had recorded that no designated heritage assets lay within the area of the proposed development. However, some potential for prehistoric archaeological remains was identified in the surrounding landscape and it was agreed that a geophysical survey would further inform on this archaeological potential.
The geophysical survey identified an enclosure measuring approximately 150 metres by 30 metres in the central part of the site. The anomaly possibly related to the below ground remains of a prehistoric cursus or long mortuary enclosure. The two classes of monument are only distinguished on the basis of length with long mortuary enclosures being generally less than 150 metres long and no more than 25 metres wide. Cursus monuments are larger, 170 metres to 4 kilometres in length. Few such monuments are known in the south-west. The applicant proposes to excluded this potential monument from the development area.
