Full description

Devon and Somerset County Councils, 2000-2002, Historic Farmsteads Database, BH152.2 (Machine readable data file). SDV349681.

Stable. Later used as a calf shed. A lofted building, gable-ended to the west and built up against the threshing barn to the east. Originally a three -horse stable with a tack area to the west. It has probably been used to house calves since horses were replaced by machinery. Rubble stone, brick dressed walls. Slate roof. Scissor braces. 4-bays. Bolted, scissor-braced roof with a ridgeboard. Staggered, butt purlins. Datestone/plaque; loading hatch; timber window/s. The symmetrical front of the stable, facing the rear of the farmhouse, has a 2-flap, plank door in a solid, pegged frame. Above, there is a loading hatch to the hayloft with a solid, pegged frame. To either side of the door are two window openings. The left window has a replacement timber casement with glazing bars. The window to the right has an original, pegged frame with timber shutters. There is a limestone date plaque on the west gable end of the stable with the date 1875. Feeding gap; feeding rack; hayloft; tack pegs; timber stalls. The hayloft is carried on three crossbeams with joists butting up to the beams. The tack pegs are fixed to a board hanging from timbers which are fixed to the joists. There is a feeding gap to the rear of the stable and the remains of a timber feeding rack and three timber stalls. The farmer remembers a chaff cutter in the hayloft, with a chute (an old sack, which remains) down to a feed bin in the tack area of the stable. Currently used as a cow house. It has now used to house calves.
