Two former slipways of Second World War date are visible as structures on aerial photographs of 1943 onwards, to the east of Royal Avenue Gardens. The two northwest to southeast aligned concrete slipways each measure approximately 15m wide and are located approximately 12m apart. Extending from each to a length of approximately 100m towards the southeast are two parallel jetties complete with floating pontoons. The slipways, which were used for vehicle loading by American troops during preparations for the Normandy landings, remain largely intact on aerial photographs of 1945, although by 1946 both jetties and pontoons have been removed. The concrete slipways remain visible as structures on aerial photographs of 1947, although have been completely removed by 1950.
