A circular structure approximately eight metres in diameter is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 in a field to the south of Newton Road, Bishopsteignton. It is probably a Second World War temporary water tank known as a EWS (Emergency Water Supply) reservoir. Emergency Water Supply reservoirs were normally constructed in from 1941 to 1942 in areas where water supply was at risk of disruption due to air raids. At approximately 8-10 metres in diameter it is smaller than most known Emergency Water Supply reservoirs, which elsewhere in the country appear to be between 10-12 metres in diameter. At least three further similar sized EWS are visible in Bishopsteignton and one to the south. The EWS was removed following the end of the war and this area has been developed for light industrial use.
Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.
The circular structure remains visible on aerial photographs taken in 1960 and so may have had a continued function in the 15 years following the end of the war.
