HER Number:MDV105475
Name:Cow Shippon, Barn and Granary at Kithill Farm, Bradford

Summary

A long combination building comprising a cow shippon with loft above at the eastern end and a barn with a granary beyond at the eastern end. The building is typical of 19th century farm buildings, constructed of local rubble stone and rag slate with brick dressings around the openings. Combination buildings became fashionable in the second half of the 19th century when there was a move away from constructing individual buildings for separate functions. A long building is shown in this location on the Tithe Map suggesting that this may be an early example of the type. A horse engine house was subsequently added to the rear of the barn.

Building B. Long combination building of the sort fashionable in the second half of the 19th century when there was a move away from constructing individual buildings for separate functions. The building is nevertheless traditional in style of local rubble stone and rag slates with brick dressings around the openings. The western half of the building comprises a cow shippon with hayloft above while the eastern half is mainly taken up with a corn barn with a wooden threshing floor. Beyond the barn is a granary with first floor access through a loading door. Below the granary is another compartment the function of which is unclear. It is also unclear why there is a wider waggon door at the western end of the building. This may have been for a root house but there is no internal division between it and the shippon. At the rear of the barn are the remains of a horse engine house. It appears to have been built as an open-sided structure with its roof supported on wooden pillars. Apart from the horse engine house which has almost completely disintegrated the building is in generally good condition with the exception of the roof which is suffering from 'nail-sickness' so that the slates are slipping. The slates themselves, however, appear to be reusable.
This and the adjacent cart shed form a pleasing enclosed group with the (much modernised) farmhouse and are representative of typical 19th century farm buildings. Copies of old photos of the barns included with correspondence.
