Full description

Oates, M., 1996, Possible adit by the East Dart River, Sketch and photo included (Worksheet). SDV245372.

Possible adit at SX634 811 (approximate) situated by East Dart River, cut into the hillside. Oblong shape, contains some granite blocks and seems to have walls of rubble granite.
It lies about 15 metres from the river, cut into the hillside above a level area next to the river. Further west the hillside becomes much higher.
A path runs east to west above approximately 11 metres away. This path is the lower of two which fork from the crossing of a stream (Winney's Down Brook).
Feature has been sketched and photograph included.

Oates, M., 2006, Prehistoric Huts and Wall, 3 B&W photocopied images (Worksheet). SDV354765.

Small hut circle, 2.1 metres internal diameter, 1.8 metres high (altitude 420 metres); the side facing the East Dart is built up. There appears to be no entrance.
Leading upslope from the hut circle is a length of walling and a second, larger hut, at least twice the diameter, with rocks inside it, lies midway along the wall.
There is another, possible, small hut circle due north-east off the northern end of the wall.
Site previously visited in 1996; approximate grid reference SX634 811. Site identified as a possible adit then.

Richards, A. F., 2015, Hut circle site near the East Dart River (Personal Comment). SDV358738.

The old adit record has been deleted and details added to this record as it appears to have been a mis-identification.

Oates, M., 2015, Hut circles near East Dart River (Correspondence). SDV358737.

The author previously recorded a possible adit in 1996 but on his return in 2006 refined the identification as a pair of hut circles and associated wall (see worksheets from 1996 and 2006). This visit has refined the locations of the features using GPS.
The first potential hut circle lies at SX 63388 81035. A second possible hut circle lies north-west at SX 63377 81062 and the two appear to be linked by a curved stretch of prehistoric walling which extends to SX 63339 81091. The vague remains of some other structure are at SX 63339 81108.
