Summary

Excavations carried out during the development of a site adjacent to the inner relief road at Rackfield in 1998 revealed a large pit (589) in the south-west corner of the site. The pit was 2.2 metres wide by a least 4.0 metres long and 0.8 metres deep. It contained two layers of dark water-logged material. Two sherds of 18th/19th century pottery were recovered from the lower part of the upper fill. The subsoil below the pit was stained bluish-green and it is suggested that the pit was a bath or tank associated with the tannery.
