A possible former quarry pit of post medieval date is visible as an irregularly shaped subtle earthwork depression on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, on an east facing hillslope, to the east of West Down Farm, Exmouth. The broad, oval or sub-circular body of the possible pit is visible near the summit of the hill, with a possible access track eroded into the east facing slopes of the hillside. The location of the pit is visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2012 as a possible cropmark. No quarry or old quarry pit is depicted on the tithe map for Exmouth or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map of the 1880s, which might support the interpretation that the pit passed out of use prior to the 19th century.
