Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2013-2014, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV351146.

Extraction pits of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as earthwork pits on digital images derived from LiDAR data captured between 1998-2012, within Big Wood. The two former clay or gravel extraction pits are irregular in shape and both measure approximately 43m in length. The features are both partly symbolised on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s and are defined as two ponds on the 2014 Master Map. The actual extent of these features, which are both obscured by dense vegetation and only visible on LiDAR images is, however, considerably larger than that depicted.

Ordnance Survey, 2014, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV355681.

The former extraction pits are partly defined as two ponds on the 2014 Master Map.
