Former field boundaries of probable medieval date are visible as earthwork banks and ditches on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006 to 2007, to the north of Great Seaside, Branscombe. The main north-west to south-east oriented boundary is defined by two low earthwork banks around 2 metres wide flanking a ditch less than three metres in width. The earthworks are curvilinear in plan, paralleling the shape of the extant field boundary to the north-east which is part of a field pattern that has been characterised as being medieval in origin. A shorter earthwork bank and ditch, perpendicular to the main boundary on its eastern side might be evidence of post-medieval sub-division of the field. Both the Ordnance Survey 25inch first edition map and the tithe map and apportionments for Branscombe indicate that this field was in use as an orchard by the mid to late 19th century and it was possibly to convert the field this function that the hedge boundary was removed.
