A large extraction pit of potential medieval date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from LiDAR data captured between 1998-2012, within Leeford Plantations. The former extraction pit appears to be partly symbolised on the East Budleigh tithe map of approximately 1838-48 and, if so, predates field boundaries based on medieval strip fields. It is irregular in shape, possibly being composed of several intercutting pits and measures approximately 113m in length by 46m in width. The extraction pit is located within an area dominated by similar such earthwork features.
