Several irregularly shaped earthwork pits are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1956 onwards and on images derived from Lidar data captured between 1998 and 2007. One is depicted and marked as an ‘Old Chalk Pit’ on the late nineteenth century mapping, and the others are located at roughly the same elevation along the hillside up to 370 metres from north to south. They are interpreted as extraction pits of probable post-medieval date that passed out of use before the late nineteenth century, although earthwork remains are very likely to survive.
