A possible Second World War military site is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 on the cliffs south of Dowland. An indistinct dark curvilinear mark is visible and encompasses a disused chalk pit but bisects the earthworks of another pit immediately to the west. A military use associated with coastal defence is suggested by the morphology of the linear mark, which resembles that made by a barbed wire enclosure, the date of the photograph and by the proximity of two other possible military sites (MDV106569 and MDV106570). However it is possible that a temporary fence was erected around the quarries and it has no military significance, and the feature has not been transcribed.
