Summary

The present road from Creedy Bridge to Shobrooke dates from 1845 when the existing road was moved southwards to create a larger park at Shobrooke. The old road survives in part as a footpath.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map shows the older course of the road, to the north of the tree avenue.


Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Comparison between the Tithe Map and the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map shows John Hippisley's new road to have been built on the south side of the tree avenue. The old road appears to have been partially retained as a foot path through the park.

The western end of the old road survives as a footpath around the south side of the large fish pond.

The main public road from Creedy Bridge to Shobrooke was moved to the south in 1845 by John Hippisley to create a larger park, being diverted around the site of the old house. A new South Lodge and gateway were also built.
