Three fields named 'Ashen Field' in 1838 Tithe Apportionment. In an area on the edge of the Blackdown Hills and lying adjacent to a Roman road, such names are highly suggestive. Romano-Brithis iron-smelting sites are known in the area. The term 'ashen' in the field name, and 'ashes' in the farm name to the north-east, may testify to the presence of Romano-British or medieval iron slag.
