Summary
Farmstead dates to at least the 16th century. Depicted on the late 19th century historic map as a ruin, the early 20th century map appears to indicate renovation. Still in use today; unclear how much of the existing fabric may be 19th century or earlier.

Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
Brimstonedown is depicted on the Tithe Map; 436 on the Gidleigh Apportionment (House, Bartons etc), and consists of two structures. The farmhouse is to the south of the site, with another building just to the north. A narrow, rectangular shape, the farm building is aligned east-west.
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
The late 19th century map appears to show that the farmhouse has been joined to the northern building and has been subdivided internally into several smaller rooms, although this whole structure could be a replacement. The farm is labelled as a ruin on the map.
Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.
The early 20th century map shows the two buildings as separate entities and does not record the farm as a ruin so presumably some renovations have taken place since the late 1880s.
White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.
Included on list. No further detail provided.
Ordnance Survey, 2014, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV355681.
The modern map shows what appears to be the east-west aligned farm building with an extension on the north and the southern buildings attached. It is not clear whether any of the fabric of the farmhouse depicted on the Tithe Map still remains.
