Two palaeolithic implements were found around 'friars gate' in 1935.

Vis=12/11/1953 (os) "one is an acheulian hand axe, 200mm by 90mm, with the top broken off. The other implement is like a large crude scraper, squarish, sides c 75mm. The material is a reddish chert. In the possession of the finder, mr sprague. Also piece of chert found (osa).
