Domesday manor of sideberia was one of the manors recovered by bishop leofric and in the hands of his successor, osbern, in 1086 (davidson).

Woodhouse, recorded in the time of richard ii was owned by john de woodhouse. Its present proprietor is thomas gregg (nmr citing polwhele).

Sidbury manor was purchased by sir francis drake on 20th october 1582, as part of a massive property investment of his circumnavigation proceeds. Ten years later, on 22nd october 1592, drake sold his half share in the manor of sidbury to richard hawkins, owner of the other half (barber).

Woodhouse was the residence of sir stephen cave in 1876 while his (sic) being completed in 1879. The manor had been purchased in 1800 by robert hunt who, lysons says, resided at sidbury house in 1822. At this date the ancient manor house had become school.(sidbury house may have been the woodhouse mansion which, as the residence of the lord of the manor before 1879 would have been known as the manor house or remembered as such at the first ordnance survey of 1888) (nmr, citing tda 1933, doe and lysons).

Sidbury was Sideberi(a) in 1086 (Domesday). The name derives from ‘burh by the river Sid’, the burh being the earthwork of Sidbury Castle.
