Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

'Brownswell' shown on 19th century Tithe Map as two groups of buildings on both sides of the road.

'Higher Brownswell' shown on 19th century map as a group of at least four buildings with several small irregular shaped enclosures on the west side of the road. There appears to be a horse engine house on the south side of the southernmost building. A pump is shown as 'P' in the centre of the farmstead.

The name 'Brownswell' dates to 1238 'Bruneswell' and 'Bruneswyll' in 1244.
