HER Number:MDV107864
Name:Relict Boundary of a Possible Oval Enclosure at Northcott

Summary

A curvilinear earthwork bank or lynchet is visible on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2005. It appears to have been part of a boundary around an oval enclosure, this section of which passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.

A curvilinear earthwork, circa 4 metres in width, is visible on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2005. Apparently converging with the curvilinear field boundaries along the road to the north and the east, it may be the relict earthwork remains of a boundary bank around an oval-shaped parcel of land to the south-west. This oval area appears to be slightly higher than the small triangular area to the north-east of the earthwork, perhaps a result of cultivation creating a lynchet, although is possible that the oval enclosure could have been an early settlement site. The curvilinear earthwork is not depicted on the Tithe Map, so presumably passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century, although earthworks appear to survive.
