Name:Field Boundaries at Northcott

Summary

Two broad linear ditches, visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2005, are interpreted as the remains of post-medieval or modern field boundaries that passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

Two broad linear ditches, up to 6 metres in width, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2005. They resemble removed field boundaries in the wider area, and they are parallel or perpendicular to extant field boundaries characterised as ‘Barton’ fields. They are not depicted on the Tithe Map and therefore an interpretation as the remains of post-medieval or modern field boundaries that passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century seems most plausible.
