HER Number:MDV107995
Name:Water Meadow at Moorhayes Farm

Summary

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, at Moorhayes Farm. The more substantial earthwork ditches of this possible water meadow system remain visible on digital images derived from Lidar data captured during 2005 and from aerial photographs taken in 2010.

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, at Moorhayes Farm. This extensive system covers an area of approximately 7.11 hectares of gentle sloping ground on the southeast side of the River Ken. It is largely unclear, however, how this system may have operated and what components may have simply operated as land drainage ditches or leats. A number of parallel and narrow curvilinear earthwork ditches, which generally respect the landform, are visible and which most clearly resemble a water meadow system. These appear to tap a drain which bisects the system. A series of linear and more substantial earthwork ditches are also visible, from which emanate a series of smaller ditches. The function of these earthworks is unclear, although may represent part of a local adaptation to this water meadow system on the more gentle sloping areas. The more substantial earthwork ditches of this possible water meadow system remain visible on digital images derived from Lidar data captured during 2005 and from aerial photographs taken in 2010.
