HER Number:MDV107996
Name:Relict Field Boundary or Drain North of Ford Farm

Summary

A curvilinear earthwork ditch, visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and images derived from lidar data captured in between 2005 and 2010, is tentatively interpreted as a relict medieval field boundary that became disused before the mid 19th century. Earthwork remains are likely to survive.

A curvilinear earthwork ditch, up to circa 3.5 metres wide, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and partly visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010. At its south-eastern end it seems to terminate at a ditch that is contiguous with a drain to the north-east. This drain is depicted on the historic mapping and appears to be taken off the river Culm at a weir located at ST 0576411764. It is therefore possible that the feature is part of a simple watermeadow or drainage system. However its orientation matches a curvilinear field boundary immediately to the north-west, and it is likely that it was originally part of this probable medieval feature. It is not depicted on the Tithe Map suggesting that if it were a field boundary then it became disused before the mid 19th century. Earthwork remains are likely to survive.
