A circular pit up to 30 metres in diameter is visible to the east of Hele Bird Farm as a cropmark and earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and images derived from lidar data. The earthwork pit is probably the remains of a quarry of post-medieval date. The function of the quarry is unknown but it abuts the southern edge of Sidmouth Road and it is possible it was excavated for road building material.
