Full description

Ministry of Public Building and Works, Southleigh and Fairway Group of Barrows on Broad Down (Schedule Document). SDV342868.

The southern section of a Bronze Age cemetery, extending to Farway Hill and Gittisham Hill. All are round barrows without visible ditches. Thirteen more or less intact, others recently destroyed by deep cultivation. Ground previously cultivated in early 19th century.

Worth, R. N., 1880, 2nd Report of the Barrow Committee, 130 (Article in Serial). SDV123157.

One of seven mounds in a three-cornered field. Plough has almost obliterated the four western mounds. A low mound, scarcely visible except when the field has been ploughed and harrowed. An accumulation of white flints on the site. Other details: Barrow 48.

Visited on 7th July 1972. Grass. Diameter 11 metres and height 0.15 metres. Other details: Barrow 21a.

Now only just visible as an oval rise, circa 10.5 metres east-west by 9 metres north-south and 0.4 metres maximum height.

Simpson, S. J. + Noble, S., 1993, Archaeological Survey and Management Study of Areas on Gittisham Hill, Farway Hill, and Broad Down, East Devon, 24 (Report - Survey). SDV123162.

Visited on 4th November 1992. Stable, under pasture, looks fairly circular. Definitely visible as a large swelling.

Visited on 12th August 1997. Bowl barrow visible as a ploughed-down mound. Diameter 14 metres, height 0.2 metres. No traces of surrounding ditch.
