Name: | Orchard and Orchard Banks South-West of Southill Barton |

Summary
Parallel linear earthwork banks, visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 and on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010, are interpreted as post-medieval or 19th century orchard banks. Although the fruit trees had been removed between 1947 and 1966, earthworks are likely to survive.

Linear earthwork banks are visible, where the ground surface is not obscured by tree cover.
Ordnance Survey, 1966, OS/66184 V, OS/66184 V 214-215 22-JUL-1966 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357044.
Linear clearly defined dark cropmarks are visible between slight earthwork banks in an apparently cultivated field.
Environment Agency, 2005-2012, LiDAR DTM data JPEG image (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0910 Environment Agency DTM 05-MAR-2010 (Cartographic). SDV357033.
Linear earthwork banks are visible, although most of this area is not covered by lidar data. Map object partly based on this source.
Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.
Parallel linear earthwork banks, approximately 5 metres wide and aligned roughly cross-contour, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 to 1966 and partly on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010. This field was depicted as orchard on the late-19th century mapping, and the trees were removed between 1947 and 1966, when dark linear marks are visible on the available aerial photographs. These are likely to be wetter areas between post-medieval or 19th century banks for fruit tree planting, and although the available lidar images only cover part of this area, it suggests that slight earthworks are likely to survive.
