A large earthwork pit, averaging circa 20 by 90 metres in extent, is visible on aerial photographs from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010. It is similar in appearance to disused gravel pits in the wider area, and is interpreted as an extraction pit. It is not depicted on the Tithe map, and this area is depicted as orchard on the available 19th century OS mapping. No orchard trees are depicted on the early-20th century maps, and it is possible that extraction took place here in the first part of the 20th century. However, the earthwork appears to have been fully vegetated in 1947, and it is perhaps more likely that the orchard trees were established in a disused post-medieval pit, where cultivation would have been difficult prior to the advent of modern machinery. Other similar examples exist in this part of East Devon, and this pit probably survives as a substantial earthwork.
