A large earthwork pit, circa 30 by 40 metres in extent, is visible on aerial photographs from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010. It is similar in appearance to disused gravel pits in the wider area, and is interpreted as an extraction pit. This area is depicted with a dashed line on the Tithe Map, and as a separate area of scrub and trees on the late-19th and early 20th century OS mapping. It is therefore likely that the orchard trees were established in a disused post-medieval pit, where cultivation would have been difficult, during the nineteenth century. Other similar examples exist in this part of East Devon, and this pit probably survives as a substantial earthwork.
