Middle barrow of the trio of very visible barrow mounds which form the northerly part of the linear group of seven on Broad Down. It is a large flat topped mound; there is no apparent surrounding ditch. It has a height of 1 metre and a diameter of 14.5 metres. The actions of rabbit burrowing has revealed flint nodules used in the construction of the barrow. No sign of excavation trenches.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 1998, Round Barrow Cemetery on Broad Down (Schedule Document). SDV342874.

One of a group of seven bowl barrows in linear formation aligned north-south over a distance of 220 metres with no more than 35 metres between any two of the mounds. All of these barrows, with the exception of the southernmost, lie north of the east-west road which bisects Broad Down. The three northernmost barrows of the linear group all have visibly defined mounds and have not suffered from the same degree of ploughing as others in the group, although one of them has a deep unfilled antiquarian excavation trench running across it. The remainder have been reduced in height whilst the rim of the southernmost barrow is barely visible at ground level. The height of the mounds within the linear group varies between 0.15 metres and 1.5 metres and their diameter varies between 12.5 metres and 27 metres; at least one of the group was found to have had a surrounding quarry ditch and was reported in excavation as having an overall diameter of 36 metres.

Manning, P. T., 2002, Barrows on Ball Hill (Correspondence). SDV342958.

A survey undertaken by Exeter Archaeology after ploughing just east of the barrow group in July 2002 found no damage to this group.

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 19, Part 1; 138, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 366 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

SMR describe barrow 14.5 metres diameter by 1 metre high. Rabbit burrowing has revealed flint nodules used in construction. In 1982 mound described as containing two parallel and off centre excavation trenches across southwest and northeast sides. Mound apparently formerly had spaced retaining circle which was removed in 1871– 2.

At time of field survey, barrow circa 18 metres east to west, 13.5 metres north to south, and circa 1 metre high. Top uneven but much obscured by grass and bracken. Low mound to south of barrow circa 8 metres east to west, 6 metres north to south, significance uncertain: possibly result of former excavations.
