Full description

Ministry of Public Building and Works, Southleigh and Fairway Group of Barrows on Broad Down (Schedule Document). SDV342868.

Round barrow, without visible ditch, in southern section of Bronze Age cemetary. In triangular field, undisturbed, fairly large mound.

Hutchinson, P. O., 1848-1894, Diaries (Un-published). SDV339321.

Hutchinson number 54 . Hutchinson's diary entry of 25th March 1871 gives sketch plan of these barrows.

Kirwan, R., 1868, Memoir of the Examination of Three Barrows at Broad Down, Farway, near Honiton, 634-41 (Article in Serial). SDV123831.

Barrow B, about 100 metres south-west of barrow A, originally surrounded by a shallow fosse. Height had been reduced by ploughing. At the centre was burnt earth and charcoal, with a few calcined flints at intervals. A layer of large flat stones overlay the burnt materials of the mound. No interment was found. In the debris thrown out by the workmen from the excavation trench was found an incense cup. No sepulchral urn found in the barrow. The incense cup may have been a secondary interment, of a later date. Renewed excavation on the north-east side of the centre of the mound revealed deposit of charcoal, ruddle and fragments of calcined flint. Resting on this was a compact mass of incinerated bones. About 2 metres south of the mound, not far from the surface and resting upon the layer of capping stones, two large fragments of pottery found. Devoid of ornamentation. Probably pieces of the urn. Other details: Plates 5 and 6.

One of a group of at least six barrows, in a field known as Seven Barrow Field, clustered together in no obvious formation. Part of a larger barrow cemetery on Broad Down, in which some of the barrows are arranged in linear formation, some are clustered in groups or pairs and others are relatively isolated. The height of the barrow mounds in Seven Barrow Field varies between 0.2 and 1.7 metres which represents the highest survival in the cemetery as a whole. The diameter of their mounds varies between 14 and 34 metres. At least one of the group has evidence for a surrounding quarry ditch which is visible as a slight depression around the mound.
