Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Higher Bowden farmstead shown on 19th century Tithe Map as a group of adjoining buildings around a small rectangular yard with access in the south-east corner. The Apportionment lists Field Number 1042 as 'House and Yard' and Field Number 1041 to the south as 'Farm Garden'.

A large irregular shaped building had been added to the south-west of Higher Bowden by the early 20th century along with several other buildings mainly on the south side of the earlier farmstead.

Bowden was mentioned as 'Boudon' in 1238 and 'Boghedon' in 1331. This document does not distinguish between Higher and Lower Bowden.
