Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848, 108-9/160 on apportionment scanned document (Cartographic). SDV349431.
Stidstone is depicted on the Tithe Map: 3758 on the South Brent apportionment ('dwelling house, other buildings'). Homestead comprises a farmhouse on the north side of a yard with a farm building adjoining on the south-western end and some sort of grand curved structure depicted at the front entrance. Three further buildings lie to the south, roughly in a row, although the central of the group is set at an angle to those bordering it.
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Late 19th century historic map shows the layout of the farm to be largely unchanged from the Tithe Map.
Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.
The early 20th century historic map shows some changes to the layout of the farm. The most northerly of the uneven range of farm buildings is gone and the formerly central building that was set at an angle on previous maps is now shown straight; this may be a replacement.
Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 291 (Monograph). SDV1312.
Stidston is 'Stidewardesdoune' in a 1309 document, 'Stitewardeston(e)' in 1310, 1333 and 'Styddeston' in 1489.
White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.
Included on list. No further detail provided.
Ordnance Survey, 2014, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV355681.
The modern map shows the layout of the farm to have changed little since the early 20th century, although the farm buildings to the south-east of the farmhouse have now been converted to dwellings.
