Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the mid 14th century, but may be older. Depicted on the Tithe Map, this homestead appears to have been fairly minor with only two buildings shown. Only the dwelling is left in modern times.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

'Cranbrook' is depicted on the Tithe Map; 1911 on the Moretonhampstead apportionment ('homestead'). The homestead consists of two buildings south of the road, the dwelling is thought to be that at the south. To the north of the dividing road are a further farm listed separately as Cranbrook.

The late 19th century historic map shows that the northern building shown on the Tithe Map is now gone; only the dwelling remains.

Cranbrook is 'Cranbroc' and 'Cranbrok' in 1345, 'Little, Gret Cranbroke' in 1469. Thought to mean 'crane or heron brook'.
