Description: Sampford Mill was present in 1880-90 maps of the area. The three story mill still exists and stood next to the Great Pond. The Great Pond was drained in the 1950s. Sampford Mill is within the conservation area but the site of the Great Pond lies outside of the conservation boundary.
The water supply was based on the existing streams and supplemented by adding a leat from a larger stream in Uplowman to power the mills in Sampford Peverell. The leat enters Sampford Peverell at Broad View Farm, and passes under an ancient stone bridge before going under the link road to another ancient stone bridge. It then joins with a spring (now a trickle). The spring used to be a significant landmark with apparent healing properties. A stream from Whitnage also combines with the leat and heads down to the site of the Great Pond, which was drained in the 1940s/50s. The watercourse then enters the Conservation Area, to come out the other side of the Village Hall. The whole area to the south is water meadows. There is one section of the watercourse where it is directed down the middle of the lane for about 30 yards, which is thought to have been a wheel wash. The stream carries on under another ancient bridge towards Venn Farm before it feeds into a larger brook (Spratford Brook).
